Resources for Public Guardians

Appointments to the position of Public Guardian are made by the Governor of Illinois.  Additional details on the position and the process for being appointed as a Public Guardian may be found at:  Boards and Commissions Details - Appointments

The Illinois Guardianship and Advocacy Commission provides newly appointed guardians free training and upon completion a certificate for filing with the court which may be found at:  Guardianship Training

Public Act 100-483, effective 09-08-18 requires that Public Guardians become certified through the Center of Guardian Certification (CGC) within 6 months of appointment.  Details on the certification process can be found on the CGC website:  https://guardianshipcert.org

In 2025, the Illinois General Assembly passed and the Governor signed Public Act 103-64, which enacts a Alzheimer’s Training Mandate for Public Guardians. 

The Illinois Department on Aging has collected a variety of resources for individuals who are caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's or Dementia which can be helpful resources for Public Guardians.  Some of these resources include:  The Alzheimer’s AssociationSIU School of Medicine Smith Center for Alzheimer’s Research and TreatmentUCLA Health, and the Family Caregiver Alliance.  Additional resources may be found at Alzheimer's and Dementia.

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has also been involved significantly in the development of programs and services to inform our understanding of Alzheimer's disease.  Additional information may be found on their website at:  https://dph.illinois.gov/topics-services/diseases-and-conditions/alzheimers/programs-services.html
